Introducing Quarter

Why can’t we have Amsterdam style urban density in New Zealand? Affordable homes, stronger communities, healthy lifestyles and lower carbon emissions… it’s all right there for the making.

A photo I took of a very average street in Amsterdam
The biggest barrier is undoubtably boomers who protest and vote against any attempts to interrupt their suburban idyll. The second might be council planners and their insistence on things like "facade articulation".

A barrier that's less often talked about is Bodies Corporate. No one understands them, everyone hates them, and yet they are an unavoidable part of apartment living.
Why is that, and does it have to be that way? I’ve been a Body Corporate Chair for the last 4 years and some of the problems I see are:
🤯 Lack of understanding of what Body Corporates are how they work.
🔮 Lack of transparency in governance and spending.
🤝 Lack of community, tenants are treated as second class citizens.
💼 Body Corporate management firms who  solve other problems but exacerbate these ones.
It doesn’t have to be that way. I believe that Bodies Corporate can be more than a necessary evil - they can be a force for positive change.

As Bernard Hickey would say, it all comes back to housing. By making Bodies Corporate better we can accelerate New Zealand’s transition from the unaffordable, high emissions quarter acre dream to more affordable carbon efficient urban living. Throw in some some stronger communities and healthy lifestyles along the way.
Being a fintech guy (hammer, nail) I’ve starting building some software to tackle these problems. It's called Quarter.
